Kathakali 
Kathakali is an expressive form of Indian dance or dance drama. (katha stands for story , kali for performance or play ) Kathakali is predominantly in the southern Indian state of Kerala settled. Kathakali is one of the oldest dance forms considered. It is a spectacular mix of drama , dance , music and ritual . Characters alive with painted faces and elaborate costumes tell stories from Hindu -epics Mahabharata and Ramayana . 
Kathakali is a harmonious combination of 5 parts of the art : Music (Sangeetham), Literature (Sahithyam), Painting (Chithram),Dance (Nritham) Acting (Natyam) 

History of Kathakali 
Neither the presentation nor the content of Kathakali performances are particularly naturalistic, so exclusively, almost demons or gods from theHindu mythology are shown, and facial expressions and gestures are artificially inflated and to a certain number of forms of expression (eg brave, angry, charming, jealous) limited . A typical feature of Kathakali is that all roles, the female, are played by male actors. 
The actors play dance and pantomime , apart from occasional screaming or shouting, while the plot or two musicians in the hold, sung background is one of. Facial expressions, gestures and choreography require a high degree of discipline. The training of Kathakali dancers typically begins in childhood and lasts up to 10 years. 
The performance is accompanied always by two or more musicians who fit the dance percussion instruments and a Chenda Maddalam to beat. 
Although Kathakali influences of older Indigenous people rituals, as well as Koodiyattam has, it has until the 17th Century emerged as an independent form of theater. 

Masking 
A great importance is the elaborate masks of the actors: The choice of color and pattern of the character to be represented is defined. The makeup and costuming of the performers often takes several hours. Main characters in Kathakali are: 
Pachcha: are painted bright green, and make positive characters, noble hero or important deities dar. 
Kathi: are evil and wily characters, often of noble origin, although, as also indicated by their green paint, but have a negative connotation, as evidenced by their upturned mustaches and white bumps on nose can be seen after. 
Chuvanna Thaadi: are power hungry and mean and have black faces and blood-red beards 
Kari: Are ogresses and witches to make the most dangerous and most cunning characters represent the, and have black faces and huge breasts. 
Minukku: are noble characters, women and fashion. They have pale faces and wear yellow saris (women) or orange dhotis (men). 

Kathakali, although it has traditionally operated strictly a living art form, and delighted in Kerala very popular. In larger cities such as KeralaKochi , there are many schools of Kathakali. Performances, both for locals and tourists are offered daily. Typical performances take place as part of temple festivities begin the evening, and often go up in the early morning. Highlight it, then, is to witness the dawn of the evil character, or the killing of a demon.
